How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal Treatments?

It is important that, before undergoing any laser hair removal procedures, you are informed of what to prepare for before, during and afterward. Talk to your practitioner about the standard procedure and to learn more about laser hair removal preparation. As long as you have been well informed on what to expect, there should be nothing shocking after your laser hair removal.

Preparation Starts a Month in Advance

Do not tan before the appointment. The lighter your skin is when you have your laser hair removal treatment, the more effective and long lasting your results from laser hair removal are likely to be.

If you have recently gotten a tan, in the few weeks leading up to your appointment, allow it to fade. Any type of a tan can cause problems when you undergo laser surgery.

In addition you should stop waxing, tweezing, epilating and using depilation creams at least 2 weeks prior to treatment, and ideally a month or more.

The week of your appointment

If you are having laser hair removal on your face, consider taking a couple of days off work to allow for the redness to completely go away. For other parts of the body that are hidden, you probably would feel more comfortable going back to work immediately.

The night before

Now is a good time to shave the areas you are going to have laser hair removal done on. If you shave within 24 hours of the laser hair removal treatment you will find it is less painful and it can also be more effective because less of the laser energy is wasted on burning the hair above the skin, meaning more energy is directed where it is needed, at the root, to kill it off.

There are a few ways in which to best do this. Recommended and safe methods are shaving or use of a mild depilatory cream, but plucking, waxing and electrolysis are best avoided. You need to make sure that your skin is not aggravated on the day of your laser hair removal. You’ll have a smoother and faster recovery as a result.

The morning of your appointment

If you are having your underarms treated, skip the deodorant. Just wash them with soap and rinse thoroughly. If it’s a hot day and you are at risk of getting too sweaty before your appointment, you could use unscented baby wipes to prevent any smells.

For any areas of the body, don’t put lotions or creams on before laser hair removal.

An hour before your appointment

If you are using a topical anesthetic such as EMLA, you can apply this now. These products are excellent if you are worried about pain during the treatment, however do be cautious if you are applying it to large areas of skin as the chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream. Follow the directions carefully.

20 minutes prior to your appointment

You may want to take some pain killers. The procedure is relatively pain less however some Tylenols may help calm you down.

Mentally Prepare

If it’s your first time, you will not know what to expect. Be sure to prepare yourself mentally and knowing you have taken all the necessary preparation precautions will help. Once you get past the first little shock, you will be much more relaxed and on your way to a hair free body.

Good luck with your treatments!
